Covid-19 test results

Find out more information about what to do if you test positive for Covid-19 using a Lateral Flow Device (LFD) Test. Also, find information about what to do if you test negative for Covid-19, or your test is void or invalid.

Positive result

A positive LFD test result means you are likely to be infected with Covid-19. There are 3 key actions you need to take immediately:

  • Book or order a test to confirm the result. This type of test is processed by a lab and is more accurate than the rapid test you had today. You can get a test sent to you at home or access a local testing centre (near your home). Visit GOV.UK Please do not use public transport to access a testing centre.
  • If you are out or at work when you get your result please make your way home. Avoid using public transport if possible. If you are at work please inform your line manager immediately so that they can initiate their organisation's risk management plan – cleaning your work station for example.
  • Self-isolate at home. You will need to self isolate for 10 days from the date of your test result. Everyone in your household will need to self isolate with you. If your second result comes back negative you and your household can stop self-isolating.

Negative Result

A negative LFD rapid test result means you are unlikely to be infected with Covid-19. However, if you have recently become infected this may not yet show on this type of test. You should:

  • Continue to follow public health advice on handwashing, face coverings and social distancing.
  • Minimise any contact with individuals outside of your household in line with Tier 4 guidance
  • If you develop symptoms get a test via GOV.UK.
  • Repeat the “rapid” test you had weekly.

Void or Invalid Test result

Please arrange to repeat the test. If you have no symptoms you can re-book a rapid test at the same testing site.

If you have developed symptoms or prefer to get a home test or access a local testing site you can book a test via GOV.UK.
