Dr Jane Jordan gives a one hour talk. The English Government only raised the age of consent for girls from 13 to 16 In 1885, partly in response to a devastating London newspaper exposé detailing the extent of child prostitution and child sexual assault. As a result, many more such cases of abuse against children were reported to the police because of increased public awareness. This illustrated talk focuses on a number of local cases prosecuted under the new legislation and which had links to West Norwood and West Norwood Cemetery.
