Why did Gimpel, a successful West End gallerist, repeatedly come to Brixton all through the 1960s to photograph Black families in their houses, on their doorsteps, at their weddings and down their pubs? His highly personal photographs are the work of a friend rather than of a commercial photographer.
Join public historian Kelly Foster in conversation with Charles Beauchamp, Gimpel’s son, and Jon Newman, curator of the exhibition to learn more about an extraordinary man and his evocative photos of life in Brixton.
