Arable farming in the UK is undergoing rapid and profound changes in terms of the adoption of a soil conservation management philosophy.
The changes in frequency and intensity of cultivation alongside changes in crops and crop rotations are resulting in the emergence of a who set of new weed management priorities; some very old weed problems re-emerging and species which haven’t been thought of as arable weed problems are becoming an issue.
John Cussans is the Weed Biology and Management expert at NIAB (National Institute Of Agricultural Botany) based in Cambridge and is responsible for supporting farmers and agronomists to develop and deploy Integrated weed management (‘IWM’) approach in practice on-farm.
The technical team at NIAB tries to understand changes in the practical weed management issues that farmers are having around the country and how IWM approaches might have to change and adapt to new threats.
John will highlight changes that are occurring in the arable weed flora and highlight a few specific weed species that are coming to the fore as a practical weed management problem.
