Become a Fire Safety Estate Champion

Fire Safety Estate Champions help keep your community safe by reporting fire health and safety hazards directly to us. Currently the scheme is open to residents of Cotton Gardens Estate and Vauxhall Gardens Estate.

What the role involves

Our fire safety team conduct regular inspections and take action to address fire safety issues, but no one knows estates better than the people who live on them. That’s why we’re looking for Fire Safety Estate Champions: as a champion, you’ll receive training in how to spot a fire hazard and be given access to our special reporting system so that you can share hazards directly with the team.

Important notes:

  • training is in the form of webinar of up to 1.5 hours
  • we intend to have 4 to 5 champions per block, so ideally you will be part of a team
  • all reports raised by champions will be checked and addressed by someone from the fire safety team
  • the council and its fire safety team are fully responsible and liable for acting on fire hazards, whether or not they are reported by champions

Fire safety hazards

A fire safety hazard is anything that makes it difficult for residents to escape to a safe place in the event of a fire. This includes fly-tipping, anything that blocks access routes and flammable material inside buildings.

Where the scheme is operating

At the moment we’re looking for Fire Safety Estate Champions in the following blocks and estates only:

  • Cotton Gardens Estate – all blocks
  • Vauxhall Gardens Estate
    • Haymans Point
    • Coverley Point

This is a trial scheme and if successful will be rolled out to other estates in the borough.

How to become a Fire Safety Estate Champion

If you choose to become a champion, we will offer you special training to learn more about our fire risk assessment processes and systems. You will then be able to report fire safety concerns using our RAPID systems, and report urgent actions to a member of the Lambeth fire safety team directly.

The role is resident-focused so you will need to be able to communicate effectively with others, this includes listening to residents’ concerns about fire safety hazards and liaising with them in a professional way to create a fire safety-focused culture on estates.

You will also gain invaluable knowledge of housing law in relation to compliance and health and fire safety.
