Council tax exemptions

Your request & our response

1. How many applications for council tax exemption have been received in the last 12 months?

We cannot provide an accurate figure as exemption requests are received through a variety of channels, and often form part of a general query or move notification either into, within, or out of the borough.

2. In the last 2 years, how many residents of Lambeth Council have applied for council tax exemption due to being a permanent resident in a care home, nursing home or assisted living complex, and therefore have had to leave their owned properties empty and unoccupied? Please include applications made by appointed attorneys or deputies on a resident's behalf.

We do not record applications for individual exemptions. However, please see below for active exemptions as at month end for the past two financial years. These are uncommon exemption classes.

Class E - It is vacant (furnished or unfurnished) because the person liable to pay council tax is a permanent patient in a hospital or a care home.

Class I - It is vacant (furnished or unfurnished) because the person liable to pay council tax is receiving care elsewhere (but not in a residential care home, which would come under class E).

3. How many properties in the London borough of Lambeth currently face a premium council tax of 150% because they're unoccupied and have been left empty for over 2 years?

Please note that the council applies a 100% premium for properties that have been empty for between 2 and 5 years. In the last available capture as at 31/03/2022, there were 340 properties that had been empty for between 2 and 5 years and were consequently in receipt of a 100% long term empty premium.
