Risk factors associated with ill health

A description of risk factors associated with ill health affecting Lambeth residents.

Risk factors associated with ill health include smoking, poor diet and high-risk alcohol consumption. They are some of the most important direct causes of early death and disability in England and are primary drivers of health inequalities.

We will analyse data from multiple sources to help explain factors affecting Lambeth residents

Lambeth JSNA materials

In 2022 Lambeth produced a health profile of the borough. Section 6 describes how and three risk factor groups - Behavioural, Metabolic, and Environmental - affect the population of the borough.

OHID Obesity Profile NCMP data

Tackling obesity is one of the greatest long-term health challenges currently faced in England. Around two-thirds (63%) of adults are above a healthy weight, and of these half are living with obesity. In England, 1 in 3 children leaving primary school are overweight or living with obesity, with 1 in 5 living with obesity. Obesity prevalence is highest amongst the most deprived groups in society. Children resident in the most deprived parts of the country are more than twice as likely to be living with obesity than those in the least deprived areas.

OHID Local Alcohol Profiles for England

Alcohol misuse is the biggest risk factor for death, ill-health and disability among 15-49 year olds in the UK, and the fifth biggest risk factor across all ages. Alcohol is a causal factor in more than 60 medical conditions, including mouth, throat, stomach, liver and breast cancers, high blood pressure, cirrhosis of the liver, and depression. The indicators contained within this profile were selected following consultation with stakeholders and a review of the availability of routine data. The tool allows you to compare Lambeth against other local authorities in the region and benchmark Lambeth against the England or regional average.

OHID Physical Activity Indicators

The physical activity tool is part of a series of products produced by Public Health England providing local data alongside national comparisons to support local health improvement. The tool brings together data for the whole of England on physical activity, including walking and cycling, as well as data on related risk factors and conditions such as obesity and diabetes. The tool presents data at local level to help promote physical activity, develop understanding, and support benchmarking, commissioning and service improvement.

These profiles have been designed to help local government and health services to assess the effect of tobacco use on their local populations. They will inform commissioning and planning decisions to tackle tobacco use and improve the health of local communities. The tool allows you to compare Lambeth against other local authorities in the region and benchmark Lambeth against the England or regional average.
