Register your interest for self-build or custom housebuilding

Registration does not guarantee that a suitable plot will be identified, or become available.

The Self-Build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015 (PDF, 412KB) places a duty on councils in England to establish local registers of people looking to acquire plots of land to build or commission their own home. This register will help the council to understand the level of demand for self-build and custom housebuilding in Lambeth.

Local Self Build Register

If you are interested in building your own home in Lambeth, please register your interest with the Local Self Build Register, operated on the council’s behalf.

The register has two parts: Part 1 is for people who meet all the criteria below and have lived in Lambeth for at least two years. Part 2 is for people who meet all the other criteria except this local connection test.

Self and custom-build housing is built or commissioned by its future resident(s) for their own use, either by building the home on their own or working with architects and builders.

The register will help the council to understand the level of demand for self-build and custom housebuilding in Lambeth. The council will use this information to assess opportunities to promote self-build and custom housebuilding through its planning, housing, land disposal and regeneration functions.

The council may report headline data, such as the overall demand for self-build and custom build in Lambeth, in the Authority Monitoring Report.

To be eligible for entry in the register, you must be:

  • aged 18 or over
  • a British Citizen, a national of a European Economic Area State other than the United Kingdom, or a national of Switzerland
  • seeking to acquire a serviced plot in Lambeth to build a home to occupy as your sole or main residence.
  • Have the financial resources available to purchase a plot of Lambeth for your project

In addition, to join Part 1 of the register, you must also have lived in Lambeth for at least two years up to and including the day of your application.

For associations of individuals, all members of the association must meet all of these criteria. For the financial solvency test, associations must show sufficient funds as a group to purchase a suitable plot of land for their group.

A fee will be payable to join the register once the council has confirmed your eligibility:

For individuals the following fees will apply to join the register:

  • Part 1: £125 + VAT
  • Part 2: £85 + VAT

A fee of £100 + VAT will also apply to those on Part 1 to renew their registration each year.

Fees will also apply to associations joining the register, please see the guidance note below for further details.

Details of how to pay will be provided when you are given confirmation that your application has been successful.

Please note that your registration does not guarantee that a suitable plot of land will be identified or become available.
