Clinical waste

Find out how to get your clinical and healthcare waste collected.

About this service

Clinical waste is infectious waste which you may have as a result of ongoing healthcare treatment or post-operative care, and it must be handled safely. It must be stored and collected separately from household rubbish, as it can be hazardous.

We do not offer a collection service for commercial clinical waste.

What is clinical waste

Clinical waste includes:

  • blood or other infectious bodily fluids
  • disposable wipes, dressings, plasters and bandages
  • bedpans or liners
  • stoma bags and urine containers
  • personal protective equipment (gloves, masks, aprons)
  • saline or glucose IV bags and tubing
  • sharps, needles and syringes
  • human tissue

What is not clinical waste

Non-contagious waste such as dressings, incontinence pads and dialysis waste can be double bagged and placed in your black rubbish bin.

Self isolating households

If you are self-isolating because of coronavirus, you should follow the government’s stay at home advice. You do not need to arrange for clinical waste collections.
