Education Welfare Service (EWS)
Lambeth Education Welfare Service (EWS) aims to help children aspire, achieve and succeed. We champion the rights of children who are of statuary school age to receive an education.
Lambeth EWS key functions are:
- working in partnership with schools, parents, and carers
- providing advice, guidance, and support to improve individual pupils and whole school attendance
- providing Targeted Support Meetings to schools
- conducting home visits to pupils who are deemed as being ‘at risk’ of missing an education
- tracking of pupils who are identified as persistently absent (under 90%) or severely absent (under 50%)
- issuing Fixed Penalty Notices
- legal escalation to Magistrates Court.
Who is in the service
Education Welfare Service Manager
- Managerial responsibility of
- 1x Senior Education Welfare Officer
- 8x Education Welfare Officers
- 1x Education Courts & Penalty Notice Officer.
- Overseeing strategic and operational service delivery.
- Safeguarding young people in education.
- Work closely with strategic partners and stakeholders.
- Allocating and advises on casework.
- Act as the prosecutor in legal escalation to Magistrates Court.
Senior Education Welfare Officer
- Oversees day to day operation of service.
- Management responsibility of 4x Education Welfare Officers.
- Provides advice and guidance to schools on attendance and safeguarding matters.
- Delivers training to schools.
Education Welfare Officer
- Support schools, parent and pupils in improving school attendance.
- Conduct home visits for pupil’s whose school attendance is of a concern.
- Act as a named advisor for schools on attendance related matters.
- Chair school attendance meetings.
Education Courts and Penalty Notice Officer
- Issue Fixed Penalty Notices.
- Arrange School Attendance Legal Intervention (SALI) meetings.
- Issuing of School Attendance Order.
