Physical disabilities

If you have a physical disability, there is support available to help you live an independent and healthy life.

Support

There are plenty of things that you can do to increase your independence.

Our occupational therapy service helps physically disabled and frail people of all ages to be as independent and safe as possible when at home and when out and about.

An occupational therapist or an assessor will visit you in your home to watch any activities that you have difficulty with. They may:

  • suggest different ways of doing the activities
  • recommend and provide access to products or aids that can help
  • arrange adaptations to your home.

For more information, visit the Equipment and technology page.

Travel and transport

If you find it difficult to get around, there are several travel options that you can consider to make it easier for you.

For more information, visit the Travel and transport section.

Benefits

For advice on claiming disability benefits, visit the Paying for care section.

Sports

There are many sports activities for disabled people in Lambeth, which help to develop their skills.

You can get a discount at Lambeth Better leisure centres through the Lambeth pay and play card. This is irrespective of whether you are using the facilities at peak or off-peak times.

Toilets

The National Key Scheme, or RADAR (Royal Association for Disability Rights) scheme, provides disabled key holders with independent access to the toilets provided for them. These can be found at shopping centres, pubs, cafés, department stores, bus and train stations.

For further information and to apply for a key, please visit the Disability Rights UK website.

Wheelchairs and mobility aids

Independence in carrying out daily activities is encouraged through the NHS's wheelchair service. Wheelchairs can be loaned to residents who are registered with a Lambeth GP.
