Lambeth Council was delighted to complete works earlier this year to redesign the playground on Clapham Common and install new play equipment, as it had become run down and out of date. The project focused on creating an attractive, inclusive and safe facility for children and parents to enjoy. It also focused on encouraging and maintaining biodiversity on the common. The playground has won a PiPA Gold Award for its inclusive new design and play equipment.

Completed works

To improve play facilities for children and young people, and support biodiversity in Clapham Common, we have:

  • Installed new and inclusive play equipment
  • Expanded the play area
  • Installed wooden sculptures of wildlife including an owl
  • Added raised plantings bed called Hugles (a design that holds moisture and creates its own nutrients)
  • Installed a bug hotel
  • Protected large trees (over 150 years old) by fencing them off to the public
  • Created a protection zone for plants and wildlife (no public access)
