The Somerleyton Road development is a major residential-led, mixed use regeneration scheme. The programme will deliver 304 new homes (50 per cent will be affordable), over 3,000sqm of workspace, a new theatre, community space and other non-residential uses in the centre of Brixton.
Phase one of the development is underway, including the refurbishment of the locally listed Carlton Mansions (Block A) and the construction of the new Brixton House Theatre (Block B). The theatre building will include three floors of performance, rehearsal and office space for Brixton House, basement workspace, and two further floors of office space. Carlton Mansions will provide 26 units for creative organisations. The relocation of Brixton House (formerly known as Ovalhouse) theatre, is a key element of the cultural investment being brought to the area.
The restoration of Carlton Mansions’ façade and the Nuclear Dawn mural (Brian Barnes, 1981) is now complete.
