A guide to business rates

Non-domestic rates, or business rates, are collected by local authorities to enable those who occupy non-domestic property to contribute towards the cost of local services.

Over 8,000 commercial properties in Lambeth have to pay business rates to Lambeth Council. It is the way that businesses and others make a contribution towards the cost of our local services. You will have to pay business rates if you use a building or part of a building for non-domestic purposes.

We keep a proportion of the business rates paid locally. The money we collect is used to pay for the services provided in your area, together with:

  • revenue from council taxpayers
  • locally generated income
  • grants from central government.
