The Great North Wood Collective

This arts charity’s Spirit of the Estate project is currently in progress, it started in May and will finish at the end of October. The Great North Wood Collective have partnered with the Rathbone Society to deliver a project for young people of the Central Hill estate.

The Rathbone Society have opened a new Youth Centre on Central Hill which they have provided as the venue for this project. Following consultation in the area feedback showed that creative opportunities for young people affected by the pandemic was needed.

The Great North Wood Collective’s project is engaging with young people who face higher levels of unemployment, lower educational outcomes and are dealing with many challenging issues such as gang violence. Specifically targeting young people aged 12 – 25, people of colour, and people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds the project offers a series of workshops focusing on creative performance and art. The activities are free for young people from the estate.

Working with groups such as Grounded Movement dance company from West Norwood, MC’s, and DJ’s and ADee an urban artist they will offer taster sessions, events, workshops, the chance to perform and to create reflective street art.

Attendance so far has exceeded expectations and the project continues to offer opportunities to young people from Central Hill Estate.
