Targeted services
Children and young people who have a disability or complex needs which cannot be met through universal services alone, may also need help from targeted services.
Occupational therapy
Occupational therapy helps people take part in daily life to improve their health and wellbeing. For children and young people, this might include helping them with eating, washing, using the toilet, doing their schoolwork or playing with friends, and hobbies.
Speech and language therapy
The focus of our speech and language therapy work is to help children to play, listen well, understand spoken language and the meaning of others’ behaviour, and how their behaviour is understood by others. We help children with how they express themselves, their speech sounds, voice or stammering difficulties. We also support children and young people who have difficulties with swallowing.
We recognise that these difficulties happen for a variety of reasons and we will work with you to understand these. We know that if a child gets help early on, supported by parents, we can make a difference. SLT input may begin before a child starts school and may be ongoing throughout school for a child or young person, based on their needs.
Physiotherapy
Our community physiotherapists help children who are having pain or difficulties when moving. Pain or difficult movement might be caused by injury, movement disorders, disabilities or another reason.
Our team look at what is causing problems or discomfort with your child's movement. We then provide support, therapy and different techniques, including exercise, to help children improve their physical wellbeing.
Child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS)
Lambeth child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) are provided by the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.
We believe that every child has a right to be healthy.
This includes all forms of health, including emotional and mental health. We aim to deliver a safe, effective and responsive service where children, young people and their families are treated with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.
Community paediatricians
We are a team of specialist children's doctors who are trained to assess and manage a wide range of developmental, physical and social issues that can affect a child’s wellbeing, safety, learning and long-term potential.
Accessing these services
Children and young people with SEND may need to be supported by one or more of these services at some time in their life.
Health services at this level are specially designed to support and treat people with certain conditions, and normally you will have to be assessed and referred to the service by certain professionals, such as your GP, child’s school, health visitor or social worker.
