Have your say on proposed boundary changes to Streatham High Road and Streatham Hill Conservation Area

We want your views on our proposals to make changes to the boundaries of the Streatham High Road and Streatham Hill Conservation Area. The consultation runs from 30 November 2020 to 11 January 2021. Please share your views by completing our survey.

We want your views on our proposals to make changes to the boundary of the Streatham High Road and Streatham Hill Conservation Area.

The Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 defines conservation areas as ‘areas of special architectural or historic interest the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance’. The Act requires Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) to revisit conservation area designation ‘from time to time’.

The Tesco / Streatham Leisure Centre redevelopment which opened in 2013 necessitated the demolition of Streatham’s Art Deco ice rink, inter-war swimming pool, and the Edwardian church hall serving the Streatham United Reformed Church. The demolition of these buildings has resulted in harm to the character and appearance of the Streatham High Road / Streatham Hill CA . The land within the CA to the south of Streatham Railway Station is now largely occupied by the modern development which detracts from the character and appearance of the CA. The proposed boundary changes would see the following buildings on Streatham High Road removed from the conservation area:

• Streatham United Reformed Church – The building now sits between the modern Leisure Centre and the modern Tesco development. This context is no longer of special architectural or historic interest. The Grade II listing currently afforded to the church is considered sufficient protection for it going forward.
• Numbers 1 – 9 Hopton Parade, a parade of single-storey shops which are much altered and which are not considered worthy of retention within the conservation area.
• Number 245. A 1930s former office which is now in residential use. It is proposed to add this building to the local heritage list when the list is next reviewed.
• Number 374 – 380. A 1980s office block. This building does not warrant protection in its own right.
• Streatham Railway Station, and associated railway track. This is a modern building of no special interest. This building / area of track are of no special interest.
• Bridge Parade - numbers. 1 – 5. A parade of single-storey shops which do not warrant protection in their own right.

Once consultation closes, all responses received will be given detailed officer consideration before any changes are made to conservation area boundaries.
