Getting involved in decision-making

You can raise issues and get involved in local decision-making in a variety of ways, not just by voting in elections.

Presenting a petition

Petitions can be presented at a meeting of the Council or at an overview and scrutiny committee.  In submitting your petition, you will be asked to confirm which meeting you wish your petition to be presented at.

Petitions that relate to planning or licensing applications cannot be considered by a meeting of the Council or an overview and scrutiny committee, and will instead be referred to the relevant department for processing according to their procedures.

Presenting a petition at a meeting of the Council

A petition containing 1,000 or more valid signatures will need to be received by Democratic Services.  Valid petitions will then be scheduled, on a first come, first served basis, for presentation at a meeting of the Council.  There are certain meetings where petitions may not be presented such as the budget or annual meetings.

Individuals presenting a petition will be given five minutes to introduce it.

Presenting a petition at an overview and scrutiny committee

A petition containing 750 or more valid signatures will need to be received by Democratic Services.  Valid petitions will then be listed, on a first come, first served basis, for discussion at the relevant overview and scrutiny committee.  A senior council officer will respond to your petition and you will be given an opportunity to ask questions to the officer responding.

Submitting petitions

You are able to create electronic petitions.  It is recommended that you do so on the council’s website, although petitions from other websites can also be accepted where they provide the necessary information to be reviewed by Democratic Services.

We have also created a petition template for the collection of signatures in person.

Signatures from paper petitions and online petitions can be combined where the prayer, or call for action, are the same.

Paper petitions can be scanned and emailed to democracy@lambeth.gov.uk or posted to Democratic Services, London Borough of Lambeth, 1 Brixton Hill, London, SW2 1RW.  We recommend that you retain a copy of your paper petition if you choose to post it.

Democratic Services, on receipt of a petition, will undertake a review in order to confirm that it meets the requirements of the Petitions Scheme.

More information

Full details of how the Council will handle petitions are in the petitions scheme, which is published as part of the Constitution.

If, after reviewing the scheme, you have any questions, please email democracy@lambeth.gov.uk.
