Fire safety in your home

Use this guide to help you find advice and information on fire safety in your home.

Calling 999

  • As soon as you know there is a fire, evacuate the building and call 999 (calls are free).
  • Try to remain calm. Speak clearly and slowly, giving your full address.
  • Say what is on fire, for example, a two-storey house or a flat in a block.
  • Let them know if anyone is trapped and what room they are in.
  • Have people waiting outside the property (if possible) to help the fire service easily locate your home.
  • Never go back into your home for personal belongings. Stay outside until the Fire and Rescue Service tell you it is safe to return.
