What to do if a fire starts
- If possible, close the door of the room where the fire is and all doors behind you as you leave. This will help delay the spread of fire and smoke.
- Get everyone out as quickly as possible, closing the front door behind you to stop smoke or fire spreading.
- Don’t try to pick up any personal belongings.
- Make your way out as safely as you can and try not to panic.
- Use the emergency exit and do not use a lift. Only use a balcony if it is part of an official escape route.
- Call the fire brigade on 999 from a neighbour’s house, a phone box, or from a mobile phone. These calls are free. Tell the operator as much detail as possible about the fire, including the flat number and floor of the fire.
- Make yourself known to the fire as soon as possible.
