Sanctuary Scheme

A Sanctuary Scheme is a multi-agency victim/survivor-centred initiative which aims to:

  • enable households at risk of domestic abuse and violence to remain in their own homes
  • reduce repeat victimisation through the provision of enhanced security measures (Sanctuary) and support.

It is available to individuals living in Lambeth regardless of gender, property type and whether or not you have access to public funds.

Security measures available

The Sanctuary Scheme includes a range of security works for example: 

  • lock changes
  • additional locks
  • door chain
  • spy hole
  • window locks/alarms
  • arson proof letterbox.

Purpose of the Sanctuary Scheme

  • Enable safety
  • Prevent homelessness and maintaining stable housing​

Referral criteria

  • Anyone who lives in Lambeth and is experiencing or is at risk of any forms of gender-based abuse.
  • The alleged perpetrator of abuse/harm cannot be on the tenancy or have rights to the property.
  • Permission from the landlord needs to be obtained and indicated on the referral.
  • Client can be referred to the Sanctuary Scheme even if they do not wish to access support from Gaia.
  • All referrals need to be sent to lambethsanctuary@refuge.org.uk
