Trees on private property

Guide for managing trees on private property.

Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs)

Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) are used to protect good quality trees of high amenity value.

Around 5,000 trees are protected by TPOs in Lambeth.

To check if a tree is subject to a TPO:

Once a TPO has been made, the council’s consent is required before tree works (pruning, felling, topping, uprooting or any other form of damage) can be carried out.

See our guidance on how to apply for permission to carry out work on a TPO tree. There is no fee to submit an applications for this.

Copies of original TPO documentation can be requested by email at planningconservation@lambeth.gov.uk.
