What you can report to us
A dangerous structure is a building or part of a building that may be unsafe and pose a risk to people.
This can include:
- unstable walls
- falling masonry or roof tiles
- fire-damaged buildings
- structures damaged by vehicles
- unsafe parts of buildings facing public areas
Types of dangerous structure
Dangerous structures are generally grouped into 2 categories.
Immediate danger
These structures are at immediate risk of collapse and require urgent action to protect the public.
Unsafe but not immediately dangerous
These structures may be hazardous but are not at immediate risk of collapse.
Check if Building Control deals with your issue
Some building-related issues are dealt with by other services or organisations.
This includes:
- tenant maintenance issues
- council owned properties
- unsafe working practices on construction sites
- debris or obstructions on roads and pavements where the remaining structure is safe
- burst pipes or water mains
- dangerous or fallen trees on roads
- issues with parks or playgrounds
- neighbour disputes or party wall matters
- broken fences or gates
- untidy gardens
- general building condition surveys
- buildings that are run down or unoccupied but are not dangerous
If a building or structure is at risk of collapse or could cause injury, report it to Building Control.
