Trees on private property

Guide for managing trees on private property.

Hedges

Hedges are an invaluable part of our environment that help to screen development, provide privacy and also support a wide variety of wildlife.

A high hedge is defined as a line of two or more evergreen or semi-evergreen trees or shrubs, which is higher than two metres.

To report a high hedge dispute with a neighbour to the council, please follow our guidance on how to report anti-social behaviour.

If a private hedge is obstructing a public path, please report a highways issue, selecting the 'Road and pavement surfaces' option, then 'Obstruction to the pavement' from the dropdown menu.

For more information about high hedge complaints and the new legislation which allows the council to consider complaints, please see the government's high hedges guidance.
