Planning application process

Use this guide to help you understand the planning application process, what you need to consider when preparing an application, and what happens after it has been submitted to us.

Prepare and submit your application

What you need to submit

Our Local Planning Application Requirements (PDF, 1.4MB) sets out the information required for an application to be processed by the council.

A submission will typically require application forms, drawings, documents and the relevant fee. If your application does not meet these requirements, you may face delays and additional charges.

Around half of the applications that we receive are found to be incomplete (‘invalid’ in planning speak) either because the forms have not been completed properly, the fee is incorrect, or there are errors or omissions in the supporting documents. Our list of 10 reasons for ‘invalid’ applications shows the most common pitfalls to be avoided.

Additional information is required by the GLA as part of the Planning Data Standard. Information for each type of application can be found on the Planning London Datahub. This is already required by application forms available from the Planning Portal for Greater London councils.
