Public Space Surveillance (PSS CCTV) in Lambeth

Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV), also known as video Public Space Surveillance (PSS), is used across the borough, in our town centres, public spaces, and housing estates, to assist in preventing and detecting street crimes such as assaults, vehicle thefts, and drug-related offences.

Since its introduction to retailers in 1967, and to town centres in 1985, the use of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) across the UK has become increasingly popular.

CCTV is one of the most powerful tools developed during recent years to assist with efforts to combat crime and disorder, whilst enhancing community safety.

CCTV may be regarded by some as an infringement of peoples’ liberty. We are committed to the belief that everyone has the right to respect for their private and family life and their home. This code of practice, in conjunction with the operators manual, is intended to safeguard the integrity of Lambeth Council’s CCTV scheme, whilst ensuring the right to privacy is not breached.

 CCTV is typically used to:

  • reduce fear of crime
  • deter and detect criminal activity
  • enhance community safety
  • monitor public events and gatherings
  • support traffic management
  • assist in civil proceedings
  • discourage antisocial behaviour, including alcohol and drug-related issues
  • gather evidence for criminal investigations
  • help locate missing persons
  • aid in emergency planning
  • support the management of public housing
