- Ensure children eat whilst sitting down as this will ensure that they’re eating in an upright position, and they can focus solely on eating.
- Don't allow children to lay down, run or play at any time while eating and drinking, including snack and lunch times.
- Always watch young children while they are eating.
- Sit with them at the table, rather than behind them, so that you can see everything.
- Encourage children to take their time while eating and to try to chew well.
- Read labelling on packages. Foods with high choking risks often have warning labels.
- First aid and CPR may be required if a child is choking. Be prepared to act quickly.
- Check the temperature that food needs to be served at.
- Consider the individual needs of children - for example, those with special educational needs and adapt routines accordingly, like supervision of child.
